Grandmother's Shortcake

  • Yield: 6 shortcakes


  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4cup water
  • 1/2 cup shortening


  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
  • Combine and sift the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix the cream with the water. Cut the shortening into flour mixture, then quickly stir in the liquid mixture. Drop the dough, in rather large, flat circles, on an ungreased cookie sheet, about 2 inches apart to allow for spreading. Bake until lightly golden, about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool slightly before serving.
