Super-easy Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
- One (14-ounce) can peeled and crushed tomatoes
- One (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
- One-fourth teaspoon dried basil
- One-fourth teaspoon dried thyme
- One-fourth teaspoon dried oregano
- One-fourth teaspoon salt
- Pinch ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon unsalted butter
Directions
- This tomato sauce won’t win awards, but it’s easy-easy and the flavors are very neutral, so kids love it. Susannah likes to use any leftover sauce for dipping her crust into. To kick up yours, sauté a little diced onion and garlic in the olive oil before adding the other ingredients, and give it a shot or two of cayenne or hot pepper sauce.
- Heat the oil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the remaining ingredients, except the butter, and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, until reduced and thick, about 25 to 30 minutes. Add the butter and stir well. Let cool before using to top pizza. (Note: This freezes well. Freeze in ice cube trays and defrost what is needed in the microwave.)
