Noshing at the Movies and On Some Ersters.

Post Author: Angela Sagabaen

I did some tasting this weekend at the new Theatres at Canal Place and New Orleans Oyster Festival.

The Theatres at Canal Place went through a complete make-over and recently opened its doors just last month. Aside to the spacious, lush seating and state of the art sound, the theatre comes complete with a cafe and bar with service right at your seat. For further convenience, there are cup-holders, swivel tables and call-buttons for notifiying a waiter. I snacked on pimenton and garlic flavored popcorn, and took a bite of my boyfriend’s apple Hubig’s pie (a local treat). And then I washed it all down with a Hibiscus Italian soda.

I believe this dine-in theatre is the first of its kind in New Orleans. For me, the idea was reminiscent of a theatre I used to go in Oakland, Ca (but that theatre was rustic), so I was excited. I just love stuffing my face with a good snack while watching a movie.

Yesterday, my boyfriend and I left midday to meet some friends and eat some ersters (oysters, that’s just how some say it down here) at the first New Orleans Oyster Festival. We got caught up in some heavy showers for a bit, but the rain lightened up for us to enjoy the festival for the rest of the day and to do as New Orleans do - “le bon temps roulers” (let the good times roll) - well into the evening night.  I satisfied my hunger with a po boy, cajun eggrolls (eggrolls filled with oysters and shrimp) and a red velvet trifle. Proceeds from the event are going towards coastal restoration, so I got to do a bit of good just by doing what I do best, eating.
